Depression usually has a number of contributing factors. Stress from various areas of our daily lives is one factor. Ongoing feelings of inadequacy to meet a situation we find ourselves in can have an accumulative effect. Many people feel there isn’t enough time to do what needs to be done. It can feel hopeless to ever get ahead, or even just to keep up.
Unresolved emotional issues are another. Our reaction to events that happened as children that we did not have the opportunity to work through can still be buried inside us and contribute to depression. Depression can be anger turned inward. It could be anger at others that we don’t feel justified to have, or anger at ourselves that we don’t know how to resolve. Feeling powerless to change how we feel can lead to hopelessness, shutting down and giving up.
My own experience with depression involved anger at myself. Anger at myself for not being good enough, for not knowing what to do, for feeling inadequate in so many areas of my life. It took time to learn how to stop being so critical and judgmental of myself. Through the years I was gradually able to change my inner dialog away from attacking and toward being supportive of myself. Sure, I make mistakes; we all do. Now I know how to give myself a break for the mis-take, and a pat on the back for my effort. Usually I am able to look calmly at other possible options to bring about the results I desire.
Another thing I found helpful when I was dealing with depression was exercise. In the beginning I had to make myself go for walks, but once I felt the difference it made for me, I looked forward to walking every day. The physical exertion, including deep breathing, stimulated movement everywhere, and I was surprised at how much this cleared my thinking.
It is hard to move forward when past negative emotions are weakening you and you feel stuck. With the Yuen Method, we can neutralize those things from the past that have been holding you back. After clearing them, we can strengthen you for the actions you would like to take, and it will be easier for you to follow through the way you want to.
